DISP, PLAINLY
DISP is the Department of Defence's accreditation framework for industry entities that handle Defence information or want into the Defence supply chain. It sits under Principle 16 of the Defence Security Principles Framework, and it isn't a single pass/fail test — it's an ongoing membership across four separate security domains, each assessed and maintained on its own terms.
DOMAIN
Accountable structures, a designated Security Officer, and the reporting discipline to prove it. This domain always matches the highest level you hold anywhere else.
DOMAIN
Employment screening to AS 4811:2022, clearance sponsorship pathways, and ongoing suitability for staff and contractors touching Defence information.

Facility measures proportional to the classification you hold — from basic access control at OFFICIAL through to accredited zones for higher levels.

Technical controls aligned to the ISM, currently anchored by all eight Essential Eight strategies at Maturity Level 2 — with the ASD's new Essentials series already announced as its eventual replacement.
Each domain can sit at a different level — Entry Level, 1, 2 or 3 — matched to OFFICIAL, PROTECTED, SECRET and TOP SECRET respectively. Above Entry Level, Defence expects a genuine business case for the level you're seeking, not the highest tier "just in case." Getting that scoping right, domain by domain, is usually where applications either move quickly or stall for months.
CYBER BASELINE, UPDATING
In June 2026 the Australian Signals Directorate confirmed it will retire the Essential Eight over roughly two years, replacing it with a broader, multi-chapter Essentials series — starting with "Essentials for Enterprise IT," built to cover cloud, SaaS, hybrid work and AI in a way the original eight strategies never were. Essential Eight stays live and supported through the transition, and ASD has confirmed existing Essential Eight work maps forward rather than being wasted. We're tracking the rollout as it firms up, and we'll get every client we uplift to Essential Eight ML2 today onto the Essentials series when it lands — so you're future‑ready, not caught out twice.

QUESTIONS
DISP, the Defence Industry Security Program, is Defence's accreditation framework for industry entities that handle Defence information or want into the Defence supply chain. It covers four domains — security governance, personnel security, physical security and ICT/cyber security — under Principle 16 of the Defence Security Principles Framework.
Not universally, but it's frequently a contractual requirement, and increasingly a precondition primes set for subcontractors. In practice, if you want sustained Defence work, membership stops being optional.
Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 — aligned to OFFICIAL, PROTECTED, SECRET and TOP SECRET. You choose a level per domain based on the information you actually handle, not one blanket level for the business.
There's no fee to Defence for applying or holding membership. The cost lives in meeting the requirements — Essential Eight uplift, facility measures, personnel screening, governance reporting — which is the work we help with.
DISP now requires all eight Essential Eight mitigation strategies at Maturity Level 2 across your corporate IT environment, up from the previous four strategies at Maturity Level 1. It's a meaningful uplift for members set up under the old baseline.
